The information we are providing on this page is for educational purposes. Our goal is to educate those that believe that their cute, friendly, dog will be adopted out quickly from the shelter. We are not taking an adversarial position with shelters. In fact, quite the opposite is true. We have formed many allies with the dedicated employees and/or volunteers that work very hard for the voiceless animals that find their way into a shelter, usually through no fault of their own. Unfortunately, they fight a losing battle and sadly have to witness too many wonderful animals lose their lives. We want to make the public aware that purebreds, as well as mixes, ranging in age from puppies to seniors, are put down daily in shelters due to lack of space. These shelters do not euthanize by choice. They are forced to do so due to the overwhelming number of homeless animals, lack of space, lack of funds and lack of appropriate homes. Without these caring employees and/or volunteers, the outlook for these innocent furkids would be even more bleak. We thank these shelter workers for the too often unrecognized job that they do and applaud their efforts to save as many lives as possible.
LEt me tell you what I know to be true about shelters:
Shelter conditions are most times horrible, they are riddled with diseases, kennel cough (untreated leads to upper respiratory infection as well pneumonia) Parvo, distemper... then there is the flea and tick issue that leads to all kinds of medical issues.
Furkids turned into shelters, are often PTS (PUT TO SLEEP) for something as easy to cure as an allergic reaction to flea bites. Minpins as well as other small breeds are often terrified. They become what are called shelter aggressive, they are not really aggressive; just feel the need to protect themselves. Another reason that they are PTS.
If an animal goes unadopted or unclaimed within as little as 72 hours, they are most often PTS.
An owner turning their furkid into the shelter, called an owner give up, that animal can and often is PTS immediately, depending on space available at the shelter. An owner give up pet, can be PTS before the owner gets out of the shelter parking lot :-(
Most shelters still use the gas chamber. Dogs are often subjected to this twice, as they don't always die, just suffer the first time.
